Unlike some planets, fixed stars or decans, it’s rather obvious what Venus can be used for in astral magic.
To illustrate this in song and dance, allow me to go full 80s on you for a minute with video by Bananarama (a song which apparently still exists somewhere among my brain cells since I thought of it immediately when I started writing this post).
“Goddess on the mountain top,
burning like a silver flame,
the summit of beauty and love,
and Venus was her name.
She’s got it, yep baby, she’s got it.
I’m your Venus, I’m your fire,
at your desire.”
As these three über 80s vixens possibly drunk on hairspray let us know, Venus talismans are indeed ideal for increasing sex appeal, attraction, romance love, beauty, desire and sensuality.
However, let’s not sell Lady Venus short. She also can also brings us creativity, skills in the arts, friendship and pure enjoyment.
In fact, one of my most favorite talismans I’ve ever made is a Venus in Libra pendant I created with copper, resin and herbs. I wear it to parties and social gatherings and it always delivers joyful exchanges and pleasant conversation that rolls off my tongue and the tongues of others like the prickling bubbles in a bottle of deliciously dry champagne.
What I mean to say is you don’t have to be looking for love to tap into what Venus has to offer. She’s more than able to deliver a lovely, platonic night out on the town or inspiration for a poem, painting or song.
Making Venus talismans
First things first:
Unlike other types of magic, which may follow basic astrological timing, such as planetary hours, talismans and petitions following the astrological magic as presented in the Picatrix require more precise timing.
Venus talismans can therefore only be created when Venus:
is strong in her sign of rulership (Libra or Taurus) or Exaltation (Pisces)
is rising or culminating (i.e., within five degrees of the ascendant or mid-heaven)
is free of aspects from the malefics (i.e., Saturn, Mars and the nodes)
is not combust or under the beams (i.e., within 5 to 6 degrees on either side of the Sun, or 8 to 15 degrees for under the beams)
Effective magical elections also always requires the support of the moon, which must also be well-placed (or at least not poorly placed) by house and sign, free from malefic influence, be swift in motion and aspecting a planet that is beneficial to the talisman. If this is Venus itself, great. But it can also be other benefic planets like Jupiter, the Sun or Mercury.
Although Venus has three options for talisman creation, I’ve found the flavor to be different depending on the sign. For example, Venus in (air-sign) Libra talismans are great for elegance and style as well the the art of conversation. Venus in (Earth-sign) Taurus talismans are particularly sensual, tactile and sumptuous. Venus in (water-sign) Pisces put you in touch with the ethereal beauty of art, allow you surrender to universal love and give you that special gleam of glamor.
One thing is for sure, AI certainly seems to have Venus down in her many beautiful faces and forms.
What you need to create a Venus talisman
If you have a good Venus election to create a Venus talisman, petition or prayer, you will need the following:
Herbs and/or incense: mugwort, peppermint, catnip, violet, vervain, rose, fig, apple
You can either burn these herbs on a charcoal filter or use their natural essential oils in a diffuser (I often choose this route because I live in a small apartment, and charcoal filters with burning herbs is not the nicest smell, especially in a small space).
Stick or cone incense is fine as well, but make sure it isn’t synthetic. We need the real herbs here.
While the herbs and/or essential oils are a mandatory ingredient, each of the following is optional, depending on what kind of talismans you are making:
Metal: Copper
Gemstones: diamond, malachite, aquamarine, coral
If you want to make a permanent talisman, you can carve the symbols and images (I’ll get to that soon) onto one of the these materials. They are also great to add to the Venus altar you use during the ritual (if you want to make one).
Symbols and Images
Astrological magic is a magic of images, and they play an important role in talisman creation. The following are a must for creating talismans to provide a “home” for the energy to reside.
The first is the planetary seal of Venus, which looks like this:
You then need to include an image listed in the Picatrix. Here are three images listed in the book:
The image of Venus…is the shape of a woman standing on her feet and holding an apple in her right hand. This is her shape.
The image of Venus… is the shape of a woman riding a stag with her hair down, and in her right hand she has an apple, and in her left she has flowers; her clothes are white colors. This is her shape.
The image of Venus…is a shape with the body of a man, the face and head of a bird, and the feet of an eagle. This is her shape.
Just for kicks, I added an AI image for each of these Picatrix descriptions.
If you were drawing the first image on a piece of paper* or imagining it for a prayer or petition that would be one thing. But try engraving that last rather odd last one on a small aquamarine –and that under a strict time limit. Therefore, when the images are complicated, it’s fine to “simplify” them or only engrave one aspect of the image. In that case, you should still visualize the full image while working.
A Venus altar
I’m going to save the steps of the ritual (which are fairly simple, especially compared to a system like ceremonial magic) for another post. However, here are a few tips for creating a Venus altar you can use both for creating talismans and connecting with Venusian energy.
Here are some more things that relate to the Venus:
Colors: white, grass green, sky blue
Number: 7
Animals: dolphins, eagles, panthers, (beautiful) dogs, swans
Spirit and intelligence of the moon: link here
Places: artist studio, concert hall, places where luxury goods are sold, jewellery shop, dance clubs, perfume shop, high class hotels, beautiful gardens, bridal chambers
Flowers: roses (especially white or pink), lilies, daffodils, daisies, orchids
Stones: diamond, malachite, aquamarine, coral or copper
Venusian Goddesses and Figures: Freya, Aphrodite, Ishtar, Oshun, Lakshmi, Astarte, Xochiquetzal, Qetesh, Lalita, Rati
Here’s where creativity comes in. For example, your Venus altar could include 7 green candles, a fragrant mix of lilies, roses and daffodils, the magic square of the Venus, a statue of Venus (or another Venusian-type goddess), lots of bling, lace and silk, pictures of saftig young beauties like the AI Venuses above, collage of places and animals associated with Lady Venus or a love poem penned by yourself or someone famous.
Or another idea completely. It’s really up to you.
